![]() You can however hook up an antenna (even a pair of "rabbit ears") to see what type of OTA stations you can pick up, So you cannot record any analog cable stations (basic cable). While the selection of these channels varies from market to market, most markets will only receive their local network channels that are offered on the digital teir (usually the HD ones).Īlso keep in mind that the HDHR is a digital only tuner. Only the channels that Charter are not encrypting (called free QAM by many) will be available. Therefore 99.5% of the normal digital channels will not be available using a HDHR. First, the HDHR is not able to decrypt and digital channels that are encrypted by Charter. There are a couple of things to point out (many of which others have done). ![]() While I am not in your geographic area, I subscribe to Charter internet and use a HDHR to record the free QAM stations from Charter. Then maybe we'd get a carrier with a modicum of good service. I'm so sad they didn't go bankrupt a couple of months ago. I have no desire to pay for any form of Charter cable - that would defeat the purpose of buying the HDHR box. What do I need to do? I did a lot of reading before I started this, and I got the impression that I needed a QAM tuner (that's the HDHomeRun) and SageTV and Charter had to provide a clear signal for all my local channels - of which there are over 60.ĭo I need to call Charter to tell them to turn on the clear channel stations?Īm I entitled to have them if I only get internet service from them?ĭo I have the wrong splitter (they installed it when they added VOIP phone service but I had them take out the phone service).ĭoes the HDHomeRun use analog or digital signals? Monterey Park is 7 miles from downtown L.A., so don't think it's some podunk town. I've now tried all three and get no signal - IE: no channels. My choices were:Ĭharter Cable Monterey Park CA - Off the air cable (?)Ĭharter Cable Monterey Park CA - Cable Ready TVĬharter Cable Monterey Park CA - Digital TV. Everything went swimmingly until I got to the part about picking a cable carrier based on my zip code. I started to install the SageTV software. The computer is hard wired to an Airport Extreme (n networking). I downloaded SageTV on my new MacBook 13" and started installing. I have Charter FOR INTERNET ONLY!!! (Sorry, just want to be clear and not have you miss an important point). I hooked up the HDHomeRun box to a splitter behind the CHARTER cable modem. I bought a SiliconDust HDHomeRun dual tuner box. I'm a computer tech so I've got a bunch of PC's laying around - both Win and Mac. I want to be on the bleeding edge of free TV. ![]() ![]() I'm brand new to this but I'm hot to close my Dish Network account and save $120 per month. ![]()
